Member Profile: Rabiah Peoples, KlyMaxx Hair Studios, Richmond, VA

Rabiah Peoples' name describes her best: a "people" person with a desire to help others look and feel their best.

Peoples became a licensed beauty professional four years ago after she completed a two-year program through a high school cosmetology program.

"I have always enjoyed the beauty field," Peoples says. "I like the creative aspects of it. This is what I wanted to do ever since I was old enough to make that decision for myself."

Peoples focuses her energy and enthusiasm primarily on hair, but finds overall image making a rewarding experience. "When a person looks good, they feel better about themselves. I love the after-product of my work," she explains.

This enjoyment of her work has led Peoples into an interesting sideline: wigs and hair pieces. "I find wigs and hair pieces particularly interesting because you meet a lot of different people with a lot of difference circumstances." Specifically, Peoples works with cancer patients, and will soon launch a new mobile service "For People's Comfort." This "salon on wheels" will make visits to hospital rooms, homes and other discreet locations where clients will receive more private consultation for wigs, hair pieces and cosmetics.

"I am volunteering for the American Cancer Society's 'Look Good, Feel Better' program. We will go in and offer consultations, fittings and support to help those who have undergone chemotherapy. There is a lot that we can help them with cosmetically. It helps them in the healing process," she explains.

Which leads her to her best advice for newcomers to the beauty field: Learn from what life brings you. "I would encourage students to take every opportunity to learn new things. Don't be afraid to open yourself to new experiences. I am an African American and I started out in a predominantly white salon. It didn't matter to me; it's all about texture anyway. That's where my opportunity arrived, and I took advantage of it to expand my knowledge."

Making the most of opportunities recently led Peoples to rent a chair in the four-chair KlyMaxx Hair Studios. In business for herself now, she has realized another dream: to be her own boss. She attributes her success to continually seeking new experiences and knowledge. "This is what has helped me most. You have to keep current to keep yourself in demand," she recommends.
