10 Steps to a Better Relationship With Your Client
By Lionel Hong-Long
The beauty salon business is a service-oriented type of business that relies on providing several types of hair and beauty service to clients. When we examine the meaning of service we find that it is work, help or a duty performed for others. It can also refer to advice or attention.
All salon owners and managers as well as other beauty professionals must remember that they are providing select services to clients at all times. The most successful salons will be committed to client services and will treat each client as the most important part of their successful business.
The clients of the nineties demand service. It is up to the stylists, colorists and cosmetologists to understand the positive aspects of service, especially when the service is provided in a sincere friendly manner. Too often, some salon professionals confuse service with servitude. Servitude refers to slavery or bondage. This is a negative role or position for anyone to be in.
However, the definition of service in the salon business should be clearly understood by all cosmetologists. The most successful salon owners will understand the value of providing service as a talent along with the other skills that they expect the staff to have. Here are 10 keys to developing positive servicing techniques. Use these 10 steps to review and improve the manner in which you deal with your clients:
- Be aware of good verbal communication at all times. The ability to speak clearly inspires confidence.
- Pay attention to body language or non-verbal communication. Make sure that this part of your presentation matches your verbal skills. Remember to smile.
- Greet your clients in a cheerful and courteous manner. Take time to address your clients by name when you welcome them to your salon.
- Consultations are an important part of providing salon service. Keep the comments direct and specific to the needs of the client.
- Shampoo and conditioners are also key steps in the service cycle. Discuss the benefits of the products and explain home care procedures including scalp massage.
- Cutting sessions are very important and conversation at this point should evolve around the service. Explain what, why and how you are cutting.
- Styling is also a vital process in the service cycle. Demonstrate the styling tools and aids. Pass on any styling tips that will help to educate the client care for new hair design.
- Close the clients session with a review of the services just provided. Introduce the client to the retail areas where they can purchase the products and tools that they will need to maintain their home care program.
- Make sure that your client is satisfied before leaving. Smile and thank them for coming to your salon business.
- Follow up with each of your clients. Todays business is very competitive. Dont take your salon business for granted. Reach out to your valued clients with phone calls for the next appointments, thank-you notes, a newsletter, or products and tools demonstration.
